YardApes, Inc. Receives Award–Lawn & Landscape

NEW MILFORD, Conn. –YardApes received the best large business award from the Greater New Milford Chamber of Commerce at the chamber’s Crystal Winter Gala. Each year, the award is given to a business that provides outstanding service to both the chamber and the community.

“I started out with a lawnmower and a truck,” said Shayne Newman, founder and president of YardApes. “I never thought I’d have an impact on the community like this.”

Newman has supported the community by sponsoring the YardApes Quad-Am Golf Classic since 2006. To date, the event has raised $35,000 for nonprofit organizations in the region, including groups such as MVP/SOS and Literacy Volunteers on the Green.

Newman said he likes to support a group for a couple of years and then move on to another one in an effort to spread the proceeds around.

YardApes has also been involved with the Professional Landcare Network’s (PLANET) Day of Service, a program through which Newman and his staff volunteer their time and materials to revitalize civic venues such as the Creative Playground, The Pratt Nature Center, Harrybrooke Park and Sullivan Farm in New Milford.

YardApes also reaches out to the community through its participation in Project EverGreen’s GreenCare for Troops, an organization matching green industry professionals with men and women serving in the armed forces while away from home.

CT LANDSCAPE FIRM SEEKS SUBMISSIONS FOR LOCAL “DAY OF SERVICE” CONTEST

New Milford, CT. February 13, 2012—YardApes founder Shayne Newman, along with his firm’s team of volunteers, will revitalize the green-spaces of one area non-profit organization and one area homeowner, Friday April 20th 2012.

The Day of Service Contest is a need-based initiative.  Contest winners, determined and vetted by Mr. Newman and his staff, must demonstrate a need for a green-space renewal and revitalization.

Last year’s projects included a landscape renewal for Harrybrooke Park, 64 Lanesville Road, New Milford, The Pratt Nature Center, 163 Paper Mill Road, New Milford, as well as for a for New Milford resident.

“I thought it might be nice, given the economic climate to once again open this up to homeowners and nonprofits,” said Mr. Newman in a statement. “After last year’s efforts, we couldn’t have been more proud, or felt more fulfilled. We sincerely enjoyed a day working together with the common goal of making a difference in our community. Green-spaces were renewed, as was our belief in volunteerism and community outreach. And now we’re looking forward to doing it again.”

Both projects will be part of a nationwide “Day of Service” initiated by national Professional Landcare Network lawn and landscape association PLANET, with the goal of giving its 4,200 member companies an opportunity to plan, organize, and carry out projects to benefit their local communities.

A PLANET member and Landcare Network Public Relations Committee Chairperson, Mr. Newman is a recognized leader in community service contributions throughout the year.  The YardApes founder became a “Day of Service” charter participant with the central mission of “demonstrating goodwill and environmental stewardship in revitalizing the places where people live, work, and play.”

Contest submissions should be received by March 20th, 2012. The landscaping firm needs time to assess the nature of the projects, order materials and mobilize volunteers. Briefly describe the state of your green-space and send photos to: Kristen@YardApes.org or by mail: YardApes, Inc. 18 Aspetuck Ridge Road, New Milford, CT. 06776

CT LANDSCAPE FIRM TO HOST GOLF TOURNAMENT FOR LOCAL NONPROFIT

NEW MILFORD, CT. August 14, 2011 – YardApes, Inc. will host the Quad-Am Golf Classic on Monday, October 3, 2011 at Bulls Bridge Golf Course in South Kent, CT.

Proceeds from the tournament benefit The YardApes Charity Fund; since its inception, the fund has raised $35,000 for local nonprofits. Literacy Volunteers on the Green (LVG) will receive all proceeds from this year’s Golf Classic.

“The literacy rates in Litchfield County are surprising. We can do better. Literacy affects every facet of life. It’s something we all take for granted. Those who struggle with basic literacy face obvious disadvantages in terms of employment, interaction with their children, and their children’s teachers, for example, ” said Shayne Newman, founder of YardApes, Inc., in a statement. “I have to believe the challenges of our community’s minority changes the community as a whole.”

LVG is “dedicated to enriching the lives of individuals through English language instruction, basic reading skills and an introduction to the fullness of American life. This is accomplished under the direction of tutors who are trained and supported by the organization. All instructional services are provided free of charge,” according to the volunteer nonprofit’s mission statement.

Participation in this year’s tournament, whether through donation for raffle prizes, silent and live auction, or sponsorship is critical its success.   “We hope to hear from previous sponsors—friends of the tournament—and look forward to welcoming new donors and sponsors as well,” said Mr. Newman.

Player registration deadline is September 16, 2011.  Space is limited to 120 players.  A tour of the course, online player registration, as well as fields for sponsorship and donation are available through YardApes’ tournament link:  http://yardapes.org/2011-golf-classic/.

The tournament schedule is as follows:  11am registration and lunch; 12pm tee time; 5:30pm dinner and awards ceremony at Bulls Bridge Inn.

YardApes Landscaping Donates Lawn Care Services to Military Families

New Milford, CT, April 7, 2011– YardApes, Inc. in partnership with Project EverGreen will again participate in “GreenCare for Troops” in the greater New Milford area. Project EverGreen is a nationwide outreach program initiated to connect local area lawn and landscape firms with families of the men and women serving their country in the armed forces.

“Lawn and landscape maintenance,” said YardApes founder Shayne Newman, “becomes a definite hardship when a family’s primary source of income is on active duty and away from home.” While participation is limited, Mr. Newman encourages eligible families to contact YardApes, Inc. to apply for its services.

“By maintaining a healthy lawn and property, we hope to contribute to the families’ overall well being during a very stressful time in their lives. It’s a sincere gesture of support.”

Based in Minnesota, Project EverGreen is a national non-profit organization that represents green industry service providers, associations, suppliers, distributors, media companies, and other organizations and individuals. Its mission is to raise awareness of the environmental, economic and lifestyle benefits of landscapes, and promote the significance of those who preserve and enhance green spaces at home, work and recreation.

Worth Waiting For…

Our hats are off to Sue Metcalf who has spent the better part of two years tirelessly raising money for the new walkway at New Milford’s Historical Society. Mrs. Metcalf had to sell many a paver to make it happen. Here are some photos of the walkway YardApes was honored to install.
